    LONDON (AP) — He was beaten in his own Olympic trials, but Usain Bolt came through when it really mattered.

    The world record holder captured his second straight gold medal in the 100-meters blazing to an Olympic record time of 9.63 seconds.

    He joins Carl Lewis as the only men to win the 100 in consecutive Olympics.

    Bolt edged out fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake who settled for the silver medal. Blake beat Bolt in both the 100 and 200 meters at the Jamaican Olympic trials.

    The bronze medal went to 2004 Olympic champ Justin Gatlin of the United States.

    TRACK AND FIELD-WOMEN’S 400-METERS

    U.S. takes gold, bronze in women’s 400

    LONDON (AP) — Sanya Richards-Ross has given the United States its first track and field gold medal of the London Olympics with a win in the women’s 400-meters. The 2008 bronze medalist won in a time of 49.55 second to edge out Britain’s Christine Ohuruogu (oh-hah-ROO’-goo). DeeDee Trotter finished third to give the Americans a bronze medal as well.

    LONDON (AP) — Double amputee Oscar Pistorius came up short of reaching the finals in the 400-meters, finishing last in his semifinals. The 25-year old South African mounted a lengthy battle to win the right to compete in the Olympics arguing the carbon fiber blades he runs on don’t give him a competitive advantage.

    World champion Kirani James immediately walked over to Pistorius after the race and asked for his name bib as a souvenir.

    Pistorius is still expected to run the 4×400 relays, which start Thursday.

     

     

     

     

     

    MEN’S TENNIS

    Murray beats Federer for the gold

    WIMBLEDON (AP) — Britain’s Andy Murray sent Centre Court at Wimbledon into a frenzy.

    The Scotsman used England’s hallowed tennis grounds as a stage for the host nation’s celebration when he beat Roger Federer 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 to capture the men’s tennis Olympic gold medal.

    It was a breakthrough victory for Murray, who has lost all four of his Grand Slam finals, three against Federer. The most recent came in the Wimbledon finals last month.

    Williams sisters win again

    WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Serena and Venus Williams teamed up to win the gold medal in women’s doubles at the Olympics. The win came a day after Serena won the singles gold. The American sisters beat Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic 6-4, 6-4. By winning, Serena became tennis’ first double gold medalist at an Olympics since Venus won singles and doubles at the 2000 Sydney Games.

    WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS

    A silver for Maroney

    LONDON (AP) — McKayla Maroney of the U.S. fell on her second attempt in the vault final to finish with the silver medal. Maroney was the heavy favorite after winning the world title last year and posting the highest qualifying score in London.

    LONDON (AP) — Destinee Hooker scored 19 points to lead the undefeated U.S. women’s volleyball team to a 27-25, 25-16, 25-19 win over Turkey in in preliminary pool play at the London Olympics

    The top-ranked U.S. team was hurt in the third set when captain and three-time Olympian Lindsey Berg appeared to injure her left ankle. The top-ranked Americans had already clinched the top seed in its pool for the Tuesday quarterfinals.

     

     

     

     

    WOMEN’S SOCCER

    Canada coach: U.S. uses illegal tactics

    MANCHESTER, England (AP) — The coach of the Canadian women’s soccer team has accused the United States of using “highly illegal” tactics during the Olympics.

    John Herdman says that some of the physical marking done by U.S. players on corner kicks and free kicks violates the rules.

    Herdman said he hopes to “raise awareness” of the tactics to the game officials when Canada plays the U.S. in the semifinals on Monday. The Americans haven’t lost to their northern neighbors in 11 years.

    WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

    U.S. rolls past China

    LONDON (AP) — Diana Taurasi’s 22 points helped U.S. women’s basketball team recover from a slow start to crush China 114-63. The Americans tied their own Olympic scoring record in the victory.

    The victory was the Americans’ 38th straight in Olympic play and gave them the top seed in the group for the quarterfinals. The U.S. will meet Canada on Tuesday.

    WOMEN’S WATER POLO

    U.S reaches semis

    LONDON (AP) — Betsey Armstrong racked up 13 saves and Melissa Seidemann scored three goals to power the U.S. past Italy 9-6 and into the women’s water polo semifinals.
