Concerns over skateboarders not wearing helmets and body pads has lead to the closing of a new skate park in Ocean City only one week after it opened.

The new Cape May County Skateboard Park at Fifth Street and Asbury Avenue was closed at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday due to skaters shunning posted rules requiring the use of helmets and pads, ocnjdaily.com reports.

Community Services Director Mike Allegretto says while the park will remain closed indefinitely, “We need to find a better way to communicate the requirements of the park."

The free park rules are visible at the entrance. But from the park’s opening last Thursday, there were reportedly fewer skateboarders without helmets than with.
