It's been 16 years since Kelly Clarkson won American Idol, a victory since which she's performed for the Pope and President Barack Obama, sold nearly 30 million albums and racked up three Grammy Award wins with the added distinction of being the most nominated pop act in the show's history.

That all said, the question remains: How the hell has she not performed at the Super Bowl halftime show yet?

That's what Clarkson's fans were asking after a truly incredible set Monday night (August 27) at the U.S. open in New York City, where Clarkson performed 15 years' worth of hits that included "Since U Been Gone," "Heartbeat Song" and "Walk Away" and the type of vocals and showmanship that first made her a star in 2002.

To put it simply, she brought the house down — not that it should have come as any surprise. Clarkson has been wowing crowds at stages across the world since the beginning of her career, and has stolen the show at the Grammys on multiple occasions, delivered one of the most memorable National Anthem performances in Super Bowl history and, of course, gifted Idol that uber-viral "Piece by Piece" performance just a couple years back.

So fans finally decided to speak up on behalf of Miss Independent — if contemporaries Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake and Beyonce have already gotten the chance to put on a show on football's biggest night (some on more than one occasion), where's the love for Clarkson, who, by the way, is first artist in history to top pop, adult contemporary, adult pop, country and dance charts on Billboard (can you say genre-spanning and country-crossing appeal?)?

(Oh, and for kicks, it's worth noting that Billboard has named Clarkson the 28th most successful woman in music in modern chart history, which puts her above Spears, Celine Dion, Destiny's Child, Jennifer Lopez, Adele and Christina Aguilera, some of whom have already delivered halftime show sets.)
