Katy Perry Says Russell Brand Asked for Divorce in a Text

Katy Perry is sharing a painful moment with the reader of Vogue magazine.  The pop star, a Vogue cover girl for the first time ever for the July issue, dishes that her ex-husband Russell Brand announced he was filing for divorce through a text message.

There's an obvious amount of distance in Katy's eyes on her Vogue cover photo, despite looking positively fresh in a summery floral dress.

Perry says she hasn't spoken to Brand since he texted her on New Year's Eve 2011 asking for a divorce.  Shesays the actor/comedian was "a magical man" when they met in 2009, but his charm wore off shortly after their lavish October 2010 wedding in India.

"He's a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him," Perry tells Vogue.  "At first when I met him he wanted an equal, and I think a lot of times strong men do want an equal, but then they get that equal and they're like, I can't handle the equalness," she says.

Of her on again-off again relationship with singer/songwriter John Mayer?  Katy boils the initial attraction down to a casual rebound, but she did become madly in love with him.

"All I can say about that relationship is that he's [Mayer] got a beautiful mind. Beautiful mind, tortured soul. I do have to figure out why I am attracted to these broken birds."
