You may have seen some teaser shots that were released last week of actor Joaquin Phoenix's next role, that of Batman's famed nemesis, The Joker. Turns out some of the scenes for the movie are being filmed here in New Jersey.

Jersey City looked more like Gotham City Sunday, and with a very metro vibe, as seen in this photo posted to NJ.com's Instagram. Whatever is happening in this scene looks dramatic with smoke, police horses, and old school cop cars.

While Jack Nicholson's take on The Joker was whimsical and over the top, and Heath Ledger's version embraced the maniacal, Phoenix's Joker seems to be headed towards full on disturbed and psychopathic. Possibly for the first time REALLY and TRULY scary. Phoenix is known to go method for his roles, and it looks as if he's already totally lost in character. Can't wait to see where it goes!

No word on how long the movie is set to shoot scenes in the Garden State, but, Joker, directed by The Hangover's Todd Phillips, hits theaters October 2019.
