Longport officially joins the list of Jersey Shore towns banning smoking on their beaches and other public spaces.

Earlier this month, Longport sought to institute a smoke ban in its public parks and beaches to reduce secondhand smoke and littering of cigarette butts.

Now this past week, Longport has become the first town in Atlantic County to have one.

So what's going to happen if you violate this ban? You could be facing fines up to $1,000.

But it appears that not all residents are happy about this ban. On Shore News Today, one woman comments that the ban is "ludicrous." "Ludicrous" especially when there's other beach rules (like no ball playing or drinking) that are never enforced.

She makes the ban seem almost laughable, and probably not taken seriously. From her point of view it's understandable. Can you take a smoke ban seriously when those other rules are never reprimanded? Hmmm.

On the other hand, another resident supports this ban because it'll prevent animals and children from swallowing cigarette butts on the beach.

How do you feel about it? Is smoking on beaches out of hand? Read the full story on Shore News Today, and let us know below:
