An 8th grade class from a school in New Jersey caused a stir when half of them refused to pose for a photo with U.S. Speaker of the House Paul Ryan.

The class from South Orange Middle School was on a trip to Washington D.C. where they got photo opportunities with several government representatives, including Speaker Ryan. But nearly 100 of the 200 student class declined to join the picture, according to WPVI.

Elissa Malaspina, the mother of one of the students, told 6abc.com that her son Matthew texted her about not wanting to be in the photo saying, 'I don't want to be associated with him, and his policies and what he stands for.' She texted back that he didn't have to be in the shot if he didn't want.

Reportedly, parents of other students took to social media to criticize the stand against Ryan, with one writing that even if the kids disagree with the Speaker's policies, they should still respect the office.

6abc reports that the students said the Speaker seemed unaware of the snub.
