Dr. James Kauffman Dead in an Apparent Suicide
UPDATE - 2:10PM:
Philly.com is reporting details on James Kauffman's suicide:
According to sources, the suicide involved tearing a strip of bed sheeting from a sheet and twisting it into a very tight, garrott that went around his neck. When his cellmate was out at a court appearance, Kauffman apparently lopped the sheet onto the slats of the lower bunk, lay face down and created “just enough pressure to suffocate him, but it looks like he’s sleeping,” one source said. “This was very thought out,” the source said.
UPDATE - 1:45PM:
Statement from the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office:
James Kauffman had been housed in Hudson County Jail as a result of credible threats to his life. The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office can confirm that we were notified by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office that James Kauffman died in an apparent suicide on Friday morning, January 26, 2018. The investigation is continuing and we will have no further comment at this time.
James Kauffman, the 68-year-old doctor who remained under a cloud of suspicion for years in connection with his wife's murder, who was one of eight people recently charged in connection to her death, has apparently committed suicide in his jail cell.
Multiple sources have confirmed to our sister station WPG's Harry Hurley that Dr. James Kauffman is dead.
Hurley has contacted the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office to confirm, but they have not yet released a statement. However, another source close to the April Kauffman murder case has confirmed that he is dead. Kauffman was relocated to another county in New Jersey because of a death threat made on his life.
