Do You Have to Keep Butter in The Refrigerator?

Wife Karin was yelling at me for leaving the butter on the counter and letting it get soft in order to spread it on a bagel.I said that it's perfectly fine to leave butter out on the counter and it doesn't have to be refrigerated unless you are storing it for a longer period of time.

So, who is right: Mike or Wife Karin?  Do you have to refrigerate butter?
