Disney Channel to Host Ultimate High School Reunion for Official ‘High School Musical’ 10 Year Anniversary Special

Historically, most high school reunions can be a horror show—seriously, do you really wanna see all those people from your days of zits, awkward hormonal flirting, and cringe-worthy fashion choices ten years later just to prove that you’re not still that same dork you were back then? Because, chances are, you’re totally still that same dork, just with a better complexion and slightly better flirting skills. Plus, like, real-life so does not go the way of Romy and Michele, and no one is going to believe you when you say you invented Post-Its.

Yet, somewhere out there is a high school utopia of bright, cheerful dance numbers, suspiciously beautiful teenagers, and saccharine happy endings where everybody gets what they want (i.e. the girl, the boy, the scholarship, whatever). That utopia, of course, comes courtesy of Disney, and it’s called High School Musical.

It’s been almost ten years to the day since the Disney Channel Original Movie burst onto television screens on January 20, 2006, becoming an instant DCOM classic and pop culture phenomenon, launching a massive film, music, stage and merchandise franchise as well as the careers of stars like Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Tisdale.

In true high school reunion fashion, a special celebration is set to take place on Wednesday January 20, when the Disney Channel is set to air a telecast of the film, along with special anniversary segments featuring the original cast: Vanessa Hudgens (Gabriella), Ashley Tisdale (Sharpay), Lucas Grabeel (Ryan), Corbin Bleu (Chad), and Monique Coleman (Taylor).

To share their excitement, Tisdale and Grabeel, who portrayed sister-brother duo Sharpay and Ryan in the films, took to social media to post a few behind-the-scenes pics from the set:

In somewhat more disappointing news, however, it’s been revealed that Efron, who played male lead Troy in the series, was unable to participate with the other cast members during filming of the special segments, and will instead appear in an individual pre-taped message for the fans.

Nevertheless, we’re still excited to return to East High this week. Go Wildcats!
