Evesham police warn New Jersey residents about a phone scam that tricked one business owner into giving them over $2,000.

6abc reports, the scammers are pretending to be PSE&G employees. According to police, they call and threaten to turn off electric and gas services unless they get their payment.

Police are telling residents to always be cautious when someone asks for money over the phone. One business owner was suckered in, and actually gave the scammers $2,400 until he realized his bills weren't overdue at all.

If you are ever in doubt, hang up and call your utility company directly to double check.
