A retired New Jersey police officer is filing a lawsuit against an Atlantic City restaurant, after a beer he ordered three years ago left him severely injured.

According to ABC News, Richard Washart, 53, ordered a beer at McCormick and Schmick's in Harrah's Atlantic City and after one gulp felt an immediate pain. The pain was so severe it caused him to vomit blood and resulted in him being hospitalized for a week. According to doctors, Washart ingested a lye-like substance that burned away part of his stomach's lining.

The beer distributor Kramer Beverage, also named in the lawsuit, had apparently cleaned the beer lines that contributed to the poisoning.

The restaurant has yet to comment.
