On Friday, November 25, Amber Heard bravely opened up about her experience with domestic violence in a new PSA for the #GirlGaze Project.

While Heard doesn't mention by name her ex-husband Johnny Depp, who allegedly physically abused her during their relationship and who she filed for divorce from back in May, she does talk about her experience as a survivor.

"As a woman having gone through this in the public arena that I did, I have a unique opportunity to remind other women that this doesn’t have to be the way it is, you don’t have to do it alone, you’re not alone and also we can change this," Heard says.

"It happens to so many women," the actress adds of domestic violence which, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, affects nearly 1 in 3 women in the United States. "When it happens in your home, behind close doors with someone you love, it’s not as straightforward. If a stranger did this, it would be a no-brainer."
